Replacing a broken spring is the most common of garage door repairs. When the spring breaks, the cables on either side of the door become loose or come off the drum. A metal 2 car garage door can weigh up to 200 lbs. or more and the opener is not strong enough to lift the door on its own. The spring counter balances the weight of the garage door. A broken spring prevents you from being able to easily open the garage door.
WARNING: Spring replacement is the most dangerous job on the garage door and the National Safety Council warns consumers that only qualified individuals should repair or replace torsion springs.
